Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Isle)Through the Seasons: Wuxi on Taihu Lake

A peninsula shaped by Taihu Lake

Yuantouzhu, commonly translated as Turtle Head Isle, is a peninsula on the northwestern shore of Taihu Lake in Wuxi. Its name comes from a rock formation said to resemble a turtle raising its head from the water. Developed as a scenic area from 1916, it brings together lake views, wooded hills, gardens, paths, pavilions, and seasonal planting.

The appeal of Yuantouzhu changes with light and weather as much as with the calendar. Clear skies create long views across Taihu, while mist, rain, and winter haze turn the lake into a quieter, nearly monochrome landscape.

Spring: cherry blossoms by the lake

Cherry blossoms are Yuantouzhu’s best-known spring subject. Pale flowers frame gates, bridges, traditional roofs, and the multi-level pavilion rising above the garden. Wide aerial views show the scale of the flowering landscape, while close photographs reveal the subtle color of individual branches.

Night illumination can create a very different experience, with bridges and blossom canopies reflected in the water, but schedules should always be checked for the current season.

Summer: lotus and the lakeshore

Summer brings broad lotus leaves and pink flowers to ponds within the scenic area. A combination of a lake-facing lotus landscape and a single close blossom provides both context and detail. Beyond the ponds, the shoreline opens the view back toward Taihu.

It is also a time to experience the relationship between wooded paths and the open lake.

Autumn: foliage above the water

Autumn changes the wooded hills to red, gold, and rust. From above, paths and bridges pass through bands of color; from the shoreline, red leaves frame pavilions and traditional boats on the lake. These quieter scenes have more evergreen value than event-specific fireworks images.

Winter: gulls over Taihu

In winter, flocks of gulls follow boats and cross the open water. At sunset, the lake turns orange while the birds move between the bright sky and dark island silhouettes.
